WORCESTER LIBRARY & HISTORY CENTRE

,

Waterproofing for a library basement containing archive stores, located within close proximity of a flood risk area.

THE CHALLENGE

The basement of this award-winning, sustainable public and university library required a robust and proven waterproofing solution to protect over 26,000 archival records. The basement level, which is in close proximity to the River Severn’s 100-year flood level, presented a high risk of water ingress.

THE XYPEX SOLUTION

Xypex Admix automatically produces a Grade 4 (BS 8102:1990) ‘archive level’ of protection when there is a concrete thickness of 242mm. It was therefore specified for all archive areas in the structure. In addition Xypex Admix was used to waterproof the basement slabs, walls and podium deck.

To ensure complete integrity, Hydroswell Bentostrip was applied in conjunction with a slurry coat of Xypex Concentrate to the full width of the joints, sealing them for the entire thickness of the concrete in order to protect the reinforcing steel from potential degradation.

Xypex Concentrate – Joints between day pours

Hydroswell Bentostrip – Joints between day pours

THE RESULTS

Grade 4 (BS 8102:1990) ‘archive level’ of protection was achieved in all areas of the basement, ensuring the archival areas were fit for purpose as a state of the art storage facility and the required 70 year warranty could be achieved.
