Waterproofing of a contemporary, centrepiece development in Gateshead situated on the site of a former complex and car park that was made famous in the 1971 film Get Carter.
To provide waterproofing for several areas within a new development including suspended decks, without restriction on pour size or shape, to ensure smooth progress of the building programme with no additional process requirements.
Because Xypex Admix allows concrete placement without the pour size and aspect ratio restrictions associated with traditional pore blocking waterproof admixtures, it was used across the development in a change the original waterproofing specification.
Xypex Admix was initially specified in the capping beam, but was eventually used in all the below ground structures, as well as the 150mm structural topping on the suspended car park deck and ramp and the loading bay deck. A total of over 1100m3 of concrete with Xypex Admix had been placed by completion. As construction progressed, Xypex remedial products were also used to resolve waterproofing issues that manifested themselves during the works.
To ensure full waterproof integrity, Xypex Concentrate and Hydroswell Bentostrip was used to seal the construction joints. Xypex Concentrate and Patch’n Plug were used to seal the gully penetrations and problem areas against an existing structure.
Xypex Admix C Series – Pile caps, basement slabs, basement liner walls to concrete piles, in situ retaining walls, lift pits, suspended loading bay deck, suspended car park deck, car park ramp
Xypex Concentrate – Joints between day pours
Xypex Patch’n Plug – Sealing of cored penetrations
Hydroswell Bentostrip – Joints between day pours
The versatility of the Xypex waterproofing system brought many benefits to this project. Because concrete pour sizes could go ahead unhindered, material and labour costs were minimised and the building programme had no disruptions. In addition, the waterproofing challenges of the original build especially the suspended decks, together with those that emerged during construction, were remedied using Xypex products, simplifying the warranty procedure.
