Norton House Hotel, Edinburgh

This 4 star Hotel set in 55 acres of parkland was originally built in 1840 and was bought by John Usher of the famous Scottish brewing family in 1883. The elaborate renaissance porch on the outside of the house is the only remaining external sign of the Usher family’s ownership.

‘Hand Picked Hotels’ undertook a large refurbishment of the Hotel, included extending the facilities underground. Having used the Xypex waterproofing system previously the consultant engineers asked if the system would be able to completely waterproof the substructure that was to be constructed in insitu reinforced concrete, including the extensive leisure facilities and the swimming pool. In addition the SI report showed that the basement would be subject to significant hydrostatic pressure.

The Xypex crystalline system reacts to water allowing it to seal concrete to water ingress even against a very high hydrostatic head. For this reason Xypex Admix was used to keep the water out of the substructure & the water in the swimming pool.
