Grand Ocean Hotel Apartments, Saltdean

The Ocean Hotel in Saltdean East Sussex is an iconic building in the coastal town. It was first opened in 1938, and covered 4 acres and had 344 bedrooms. The rear of the building has views over the Vale of Saltdean.

During the WWII the hotel was used as a fire service college before being acquired by Billy Butlin in 1952 when a year later it was returned to a holiday resort.

In 1999 the building was listed by English Heritage and in 2007 work started on this project to convert this magnificent art-deco building into 279 luxury apartments.

Xypex materials were specified in this design and build project and used in its transformation. Xypex is utilized to waterproof the retaining walls and slabs of the ‘under-croft’ areas.

A Xypex waterproofing system was chosen because of its simplicity and ability to speed up the project, whilst also giving the additional benefit of enhancing the durability of the concrete in this hostile marine environment.
